Durga Puja Pandals in Guwahati 2017

Sharadostav popularly known as Durga Puja is celebrated in Guwahati, Assam with traditional gaiety, pomp and religious fervour. More than 1000 pandals in the city and outskirts with magnificent looks and charismatic idols of Goddess Durga evokes the festive mood not only among the Bengalis but also
among the different communities residing in Guwahati.  The festive spirits starts from the day of Maha Saptami and ends on Vijay Dashami.

400-year old Durga puja stands still even today
There are a lot of cultural and traditional changes taken place in Assam and its region, but Gauripur Rajbari of Dhubri district is trying its best to keep the age old Durga puja celebration alive even today. The puja in this district is probably the oldest puja that is still prevalent in the region and people are joining the occasion with great interest.

The dazzling pandal attracts many visitors from people across the region and country every year. “During the heydays of the Gauripur Rajbari, both Hindus and Muslims used to work together to organize the puja and help perform rituals as well, but now that have changed. There have been some changes after the fall of the zamindar system, but we still make our best efforts to be true to tradition,” explains Probir Baruah, one of the royal descendents. Many clubs and associations organize Durga Puja in Guwahati. Most importantly, GMC works together with the organizers in this time and clean and decorate the whole city.
